Field note

Gary Wayne comes to the Blurry Creatures basement as a cataloger. Over nearly three hours he sorts the giants of Scripture into kinds: the Nephilim of Genesis 6:4, and the post-flood Rephaim and Anakim of Deuteronomy 2 and the conquest accounts. His central textual claim is narrow and checkable. He says the Hebrew word Nephilim appears only in Genesis 6:4 and Numbers 13:33, and that the spies used it in an exaggerated report meant to frighten Israel. From there he moves outward into measurements, Josephus, Ugaritic texts, and a corruption of “all flesh” that he extends to plant and animal genomes. Those later steps are his reconstruction; the texts he cites do not state them. For the through-line, the episode matters because it separates the flood-era Nephilim from the giants Israel met in Canaan, a distinction other sources in the Library either keep or blur. Read it for the taxonomy, and weigh the sizes and genetics as Wayne’s own extrapolation.

Key claims

  1. Gary Wayne · 0:57:09 · Documented

“That's the only three times you get giant for Nephilim in the Bible is Genesis six:four and Numbers thirteen thirty three.”

He counts Genesis 6:4 once and Numbers 13:33 twice.

  2. Gary Wayne · 0:57:40 · Interpretive

“And Anakim are giants, not Nephilim, but Raphaim.”

His reading of Deuteronomy 2, where the Anakim are listed with the Emim and Zamzummim.

  3. Gary Wayne · 1:48:41 · Documented

“He had a bed that was four cubits wide, made of iron, and nine cubits long.”

Og’s bed, as described in Deuteronomy 3:11. Wayne describes it but does not cite the verse.

  4. Gary Wayne · 1:49:08 · Speculative

“So he's probably going to be four, five, six feet wide and he's going to be somewhere between twelve and fifteen feet long.”

His estimate of Og, using a royal cubit and assuming Og fit the bed.

  5. Gary Wayne · 0:16:12 · Documented

“understand in the Bible there's two Enochs, one son of Jared, one son of Cain,”

The two Enochs of Genesis 4 and 5. He says they are often conflated.

  6. Gary Wayne · 2:08:27 · Speculative

“Not just through sexual reproduction of various kinds of spurious offspring, but something more because all the plant genomes would be corrupted as well.”

He extends “all flesh was corrupted” before the flood to plants and animals.

Gary Wayne’s lineage claims

This is Gary Wayne’s claim, not Expedition Genesis’s view.

  • Gary Wayne · 0:18:39 · Speculative

He ties royal bloodlines to Canaanite intermarriage with giants.

  • Gary Wayne · 0:48:14 · Speculative

He refers to “the four races of day six.”

  • Gary Wayne · 1:01:08–1:01:51 · Speculative

He traces post-flood giant nations through Canaan and the curse of Ham.

Scripture and texts named

Genesis 4 and 5 (the two Enochs, named by lineage). Genesis 6:4. Numbers 13:33. Deuteronomy 2 (Emim, Anakim, Zamzummim). Og’s iron bed (Deuteronomy 3:11; described, verse not cited). Deuteronomy 32 (the nations and the council of gods). The “bulls of Bashan” in Psalms (Psalm 22; verse not cited). Joshua (Arba, father of the Anakim). Goliath. 1 Enoch and the Enochic Book of Giants. Josephus. Ugaritic texts. The Epic of Gilgamesh.

Where it disagrees

Wayne gives Goliath “eleven feet three inches” (1:49:27) on a royal cubit. Heiser (EP 34) says the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Septuagint give Goliath a much smaller height than the Masoretic text. Wayne treats the Anakim of Numbers 13:33 as Rephaim, not Nephilim. Marzulli (Confessionals 881) reads the same verse as a sign that Nephilim were in the land. Heiser says the Nephilim were “wiped out by the time of David.” Wayne has giants returning after the flood and again at the end of the age (Confessionals 621).

Quotes are verbatim from the episode audio. Timestamps mark the first word of each quote in the audio file we worked from, which includes inserted ads, so your player may differ by a few minutes. Runtime is the length of that file. Labels (Documented, Interpretive, Speculative) describe the kind of claim the speaker is making. They are not an Expedition Genesis endorsement.
